What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics; It is the department of dentistry that deals with the trilogy of teeth, jaws and faces in terms of normal structure and development and treats the problems related to this subject. It mainly deals with the functional movements of the tooth on the jaw. Thanks to orthodontic treatment, existing crowding and incompatibilities are eliminated.

What are the Disorders Requiring Orthodontic Treatment?

We can list the main problems requiring orthodontic treatment as follows:

  • Problems arising from heredity and developmental deficiencies
  • Jaw disorders that are in front or back
  • Lower and upper jaw closure problems
  • Closing the gaps between the teeth
  • The teeth have an unsymmetrical, crooked arrangement
  • Problems arising from wrong habits such as lip biting, finger sucking, using bottles or pacifiers for a long time

A mouth with crooked teeth cannot be easily cleaned, and as a result, gum diseases and caries occur. Chewing with crooked teeth also cannot be done correctly, which can lead to problems with the digestive system. Thanks to the orthodontic treatment applied, crowding and incompatibilities are eliminated.

What are Orthodontic Treatment Methods?

Orthodontics basically has two types of treatment: movable devices that can be inserted and removed by the person himself, and fixed devices that are attached to the teeth by the doctor. These, too, are divided into subgroups. For example, moving devices may be for therapeutic purposes or for post-treatment reinforcement. Fixed devices are divided into metal and aesthetic wires attached to the back or front surface of the tooth. Materials and types of treatment vary.

Types of Braces (Fixed Devices)

Although there are different types of fixed devices in terms of aesthetics, basically all of them work on the principle of moving the teeth millimetrically from their current positions by passing wires through the brackets in the tooth. There are 3 types of braces.

Metal Braces

Today, it is the most preferred classical orthodontic treatment method. They are the metal ones of the brackets placed on the tooth surfaces. It does not have an aesthetic appearance, but it is more economically affordable than other treatments.

Ceramic Braces

Transparent braces are the transparent ones of the brackets placed on the tooth surfaces. From the outside, the brackets are not easily noticeable. It provides an aesthetic appearance to orthodontic treatment.

Invisible (Lingual) Braces

Invisible, i.e. lingual braces, is a completely invisible orthodontic treatment option. Brackets are attached to the back surface of the teeth. In this way, it is not obvious that a wire is inserted during the treatment.

Moving Devices

Transparent Plaques

Transparent plaques; Today, it is an orthodontic treatment method that has emerged with digital dentistry. In this treatment, wires and brackets are not used. A simulation of the treatment is performed by taking measurements with digital scanners from the mouth. In this simulation, the teeth are gradually corrected by moving them. The patient can see the final state of his teeth before the treatment. The patient is given transparent plaques, depending on the measure taken. The patient is asked to use these plaques for more than 20 hours during the day. In 2-3 week periods, these plaques are replaced and the teeth are made symmetrical. This treatment is the best in terms of comfort compared to other orthodontic treatments. Because the patient easily removes plaques while eating; plaques are also much easier to care for than braces.

Is Orthodontic Treatment Painful?

Orthodontic treatment is not a painful treatment, but there may be some minor problems due to getting used to it in the first few weeks. Apart from this, the patient can continue his normal life by paying some attention to what he eats.

How Long Does Orthodontic Treatment Last?

Although it varies according to the type of problem, orthodontic treatment is long-term and each stage varies. While some closure disorders can be solved with a single-phase treatment, some treatments are completed in two to three phases. Simple problems can be solved within three months. In the fixed treatment to be performed after all the teeth are removed, according to the size of the problem, positive results are obtained in a period of 6-24 months.

Can Braces Treatment Be Applied at Any Age?

Braces treatment can be applied to all individuals regardless of age. In addition, according to the expectations of adults and children, many braces and plaque options are offered.

How Much Are the Prices of Braces?

Braces prices vary according to the type of braces chosen, the difficulty of the treatment, the experience of the treating physician and the location of the clinic. You can make an appointment by calling our clinic for orthodontic treatment price information.
